Introduction: Legal Empowerment in Transitions

Despite the growing attention to and burgeoning literature on legal empowerment, there has been surprisingly little focus on how it might promote greater social justice during political transitions from authoritarianism and from conflict. Such transitions can provide opportunities for challenging structural inequalities and for promoting legal mobilization. This introductory article provides an overview of legal empowerment before examining its links to peace building and transitional justice.
