Somnia Osbrain Foundation: Addressing Teenage Pregnancy in Ho West, Ghana

The Somnia Osbrain Foundation (SOF) seeks collaboration to tackle the crisis of teenage pregnancy in deprived areas, focusing initially on the Ho West District, Volta Region, Ghana.

The Urgent Problem

The Volta Region sees approximately 6,000 teenage pregnancies annually. This severely impacts development, leading to:

  • Poverty Traps: Loss of dignity, inadequate healthcare, and malnutrition for mothers and children.
  • Safety Risks: Increased substance abuse, sexual, and physical violence.
  • Education Loss: Limited future prospects, perpetuating the cycle of poverty (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4).

Our Vision and Approach

SOF is rooted in the Ho West District, offering inclusive, non-discriminatory support to young mothers.

Vision: To empower teenage mothers to achieve vital, healthy lives and lift their families and communities out of poverty.

Mission: We empower adolescent mothers through:

  • Education & Scholarships
  • Mentoring & Advocacy
  • Skills Training & Micro-business Support

Project Activity: We use the Community Engagement Series (CES) to identify vulnerable girls, listen to their needs, and co-design sustainable, locally-based programs that lead to economic empowerment.

Issue Areas

  • Children & Youth
  • Reproductive Health/Rights
  • Education
  • Community Development
  • Advocacy

We are looking for partners to scale the CES module and expand our support for educational re-entry and entrepreneurship.
