Oceania Pride was established in September 2009 from a collective aspiration to create a space of safety, visibility, and solidarity for LGBTQIA+ people in Fiji, the wider Pacific. From a small, volunteer-led group, we are now a registered organisation serving as a hub for advocacy, education, and community empowerment. Our mission is to champion the human rights and holistic well-being of queer Pacific Islanders by cultivating safe and affirming communities, amplifying our voices through strategic advocacy, and building a powerful regional movement for justice, equity, and liberation.
To achieve our vision, we utilise a multi-level ecosystem approach. At the grassroots level, we focus on strengthening our movement by creating safe spaces for connection, providing direct support for mental and physical well-being, and delivering targeted capacity-building programmes. To build the movement, we intentionally connect activists, organisations, and communities across the Pacific to amplify our collective power. At the systemic level, we engage in strategic advocacy to challenge discriminatory laws, shift public narratives, and dismantle colonial and patriarchal structures.
Our work is structured around core strategic priorities tailored to our regional context. We focus on queer health, striving to achieve equitable access to non-discriminatory healthcare, improve mental health, and strengthen the community-led response to HIV and sexual health issues. We also champion queer climate justice, generating evidence to integrate SOGIESC perspectives into climate policy and building the adaptive capacity of grassroots communities. Underpinning all our efforts is a commitment to radical inclusivity and intersectional solidarity, ensuring we centre the voices and priorities of the most marginalised segments of the SOGIESC community. Guided by values like talanoa, we bridge the critical gap between grassroots community needs and high-level policy action.
