Mapa do Acolhimento began its activities by helping women in situations of violence through pro bono psychological and legal assistance to break the cycle of violence. A solidarity network that has generated tens of thousands of hours worth of support for women in over 1,000 cities in the country. The organization selects and trains volunteer psychologists and lawyers to support women at risk’s mental and physical health. The qualified support provided by the professionals reaches women when an intervention is most effective, they are experiencing violence and decide to ask for help. 26% of the women who sign up for help at Mapa do Acolhimento have been living with violence for more than 10 years. The service directly impacts their lives, contributing to their well-being with the goal of reducing and confronting racial and gender inequalities in Brazil. Over the last five years, the initiative supported over 5,000 women and registered more than 10,000 volunteers. Mapa’s service provision impact has been tried, tested, and proven, but there are limits to the reach of a service based on a solidarity network. To make a systematic change in Brazilian women’s reality, we understand it imperative to summon the State’s capacity to deliver its role in the security of women.
