Global Rights Alert’s mission is to make natural resources benefit the people. Our work is rooted in a governance and human rights framework which considers inequality and injustice as stumbling blocks development. GRA empowers communities, households and individuals to negotiate for more equitable benefit sharing regimes, and to influence decisions that impact on their ways of life, mitigate conflicts as well human rights abuses associated with the extractives industry operations. The interventions by GRA encompass a range of local, national and international actors, with whom we share synergies to shape the discourse on extractives governance. GRA provides platforms that enable front line communities to amplify their voices, advance their interests and take part in decision making. Because of the power dynamics that characterize the EI, GRA has interventions that are geared towards enabling civic and citizens’ agencies to be adaptive, develop and deploy new capabilities to defend and promote the rights of local communities, promote transparency and accountability in the extractives sector. GRA’s current strategic plan (2023-2027) has four interrelated objectives namely. “Promote civic participation for community development”. “Enhance inclusion for sustainable natural resource management”. “Promote corporate accountability and transparency in sustainable natural resource management’’, “Enhance the functionality of GRA to deliver her mandate.” These objectives will be achieved through: Human and Community Resource Rights, Gender and Natural Resources, Corporate Accountability and contract Transparency and Institutional strengthening and development. This proposed project which seeks to improve respect for human and community resource rights is therefore aligned to our strategic goals, objectives.
