CHATOL – For Peace and Ecology

Presence in: India
Focus: Citizenship & Identification, Environmental Justice, Peace-building & Transitional Justice
CHATOL – For Peace and Ecology was founded in 2020 on the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The founders are two young women from Cachar District in Borak Valley located in the Southern region of the Indian state of Assam. Due to the poor socio economic condition of Borak Valley young people migrate to different Indian cities and middle-east in search of livelihood, as Borak is predominantly an agriculture and forest based economy which is presently in a dying state. The founding members of Chatol have a legacy of community work – one being a Human Rights Lawyer and another a post graduate in Social Work and a practitioner over a decade. Our community level reach out has begun since 2015 with the National Register of Citizenship as they themselves and their community have been put on a test to prove their citizenship. CHATOL aims to work on peace building, strengthening communities living in the region peacefully (until recently disturbed by the polarized politics and land grabs by right wing leaders)
