The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) was formed in April 1989.  It started as a small collective formed to campaign for the release of a trade unionist – Femi Aborisade then being held under obnoxious State Security (Detention of Persons) Decree No. 2 of 1984.  It later blossomed into a full-fledged human rights platform.  It is a Non-Governmental Organisation whose membership is open to all, regardless of political, ethnic, racial or religious background.

CDHR activities include rendering legal aid and assistance to indigent victims of human rights violations, human rights campaigns and education-encompassing workshops, seminars and publications.  Though a human rights Organisation, CDHR continues to play a leading role in championing the cause of restoring Nigeria to the path of genuine and popular democracy.
