5.1 How can you use carbon justice principles to influence global frameworks?
In addition to carbon standards, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is a key set of global rules that are influencing how carbon projects move forward. The UNFCCC oversees the agreements between countries about how to address the climate crisis. The last major agreement, often called the “Paris Agreement” was signed in 2015. The agreement includes three ways that carbon projects may be used to address the climate crisis:
- Article 6.2 covers transfers of carbon credits between countries. If countries are not able to meet their Nationally Determined Contributions by reducing carbon use on their own, they can buy credits from other countries.
- Article 6.4 is a voluntary carbon market system under the UNFCCC. This can be used by countries towards their NDCs or by the private sector.
- Article 6.8 is for non-market carbon solutions.
