4.1 Emerging National Laws

Effective national laws and policies are critical to protecting community rights. National systems are politically responsible to the people within their jurisdictions and contain the details of how land is acquired, community decisions are made, and funds are distributed. In addition, compared to global grievance mechanisms or private arbiters, the national legal systems are more familiar structures for communities impacted by carbon markets. Additionally, most of the international mechanisms have been reverting to national laws hence the importance of strong national laws.

Namati and the Grassroots Justice Network brought together network members in the middle of advocating for better national rules in their country to develop a toolkit for how to influence just legislation.
