1.1 Different perspectives on carbon markets

The intention of carbon projects is to address the climate crisis by reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. In doing so, however, nature-based carbon projects have impacted large areas of land and numerous people who did little to contribute to the climate crisis. These projects have resulted in strong opinions. This course does not take a position on whether carbon projects should exist, instead we focus on how to equip communities when they do exist.

The course is open to people who have different views on carbon projects and we ask that you be respectful if you engage in discussions with those who have views that may differ from your own.

We have found that it can be helpful to have meaningful discussions if we start by understanding the range of viewpoints. We ask you to take this brief quiz to reflect on your views on these topics. Once you finish the quiz you can see how others have answered and some samples of views on these questions from around the Grassroots Justice Network.
