5.0 How carbon standards have been used to advocate for justice

In this exercise, we have the opportunity to look into more detail about a project with reported human rights abuses and see how the carbon standards have been used to advocate for justice for those who were impacted by the projects.

Kasigau

The Kasigau Corridor Project is a REDD+ project in Kenya. It involves over 200,000 hectares of land and 100,000 community partners. The project is developed by WildlifeWorks starting in 2005. In 2011 the verifier, Det Norske Veritas, verified the project against the Verra standard. In 2003, SOMO and the Kenyan Human Rights Commission documented several instances of sexual exploitation and violence in the project. Read the summary here.
