Witness Radio organization is a nonpartisan, nonprofit registered network of human rights investigative journalists, lawyers, and social workers. The organization employs a combination of legal aid support and media-driven approaches with a primary focus on promoting and protecting economic, social, and cultural rights and development in Uganda. Founded in 2016, Witness Radio provides legal representation and support to poor, vulnerable, and land grab-affected communities. It utilizes information and communication technology platforms as its primary medium to achieve its objectives. We mobilize, organize, and build the capacity of marginalized victims of land evictions, empowering them to understand and apply legal frameworks to defend their land rights. We develop innovative farmer field skills to restore the Indigenous livelihoods of communities affected by land evictions, thereby preserving traditional ways of life. We enhance the safety and security of our staff, the land and environmental rights defenders we collaborate with, and the communities we serve across Uganda. Witness Radio’s vision is to empower communities of smallholder farmers to take charge of land governance in Uganda. Our mission is to combine media-based strategies and legal aid support to mobilize, connect, and empower smallholder farmers, enabling them to speak with a united voice against injustices and advocate for equitable access to opportunities and resources.
