Baringo Indigenous Peoples’ Organization (BIPO) is a community-based, youth- and young women-led organization working with Indigenous communities in Baringo County, Kenya, particularly the Endorois and Ilchamus peoples. BIPO was founded to strengthen Indigenous women’s leadership, advance community and customary land rights, and promote climate and environmental justice through locally led approaches.
BIPO focuses on supporting Indigenous communities to understand, protect, and exercise their land and resource rights, including women’s land and inheritance rights. The organization works to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change, environmental degradation, and economic marginalization on Indigenous women and youth by promoting sustainable livelihoods, ecosystem restoration, and Indigenous knowledge systems.
Through community organizing, legal and rights awareness, policy advocacy, and partnerships with civil society and Indigenous networks, BIPO amplifies community voices in decision-making processes at local, national, and international levels. The organization also supports community-led dialogues, capacity-building initiatives, and advocacy efforts related to land governance, gender justice, and climate resilience.
BIPO’s work is grounded in Indigenous values, customary governance systems, and the belief that empowered women and youth are key drivers of sustainable development, peace, and social justice. The organization aims to contribute to more equitable land governance, strengthened community resilience, and inclusive development outcomes for Indigenous peoples in Kenya.
