What could mere primary school graduates – shopkeepers, fishermen – possibly do against investors packed with money and backed with power? A lot, apparently.
In a pristine beach of Watu Kodok, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, a community made a simple living from managing the surrounding beach for tourism. When an investor came and claiming having the rights over the land, the community was forced to leave and threaten to be put in prison if refuse. The community was even taunted with the phrase “Kathok Abang”, referring to the uniform usually wore by primary school students, a phrase meant to degrade and discriminate them.
