Suriya Women’s Development Centre (SWDC) was established in 1991 with the objective of working with women and children displaced by conflict. Suriya started working with women and children in refugee camps and continued working with them when they were resettled in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka in early 1993. Suriya acts as a voice of and for women living in the Eastern Province and plays an active role in bringing to the forefront the perspectives of women in conflict. It continues to bring together women from Tamil and Muslim ethnicities through their human rights, gender empowerment, development and theatre programmes. The main focus of Suriya’s work has been to create knowledge and awareness on women’s rights and feminist concerns; ensuring non-discriminative law and policy formulation; and enabling women to develop their ability and autonomy within a peaceful, secure, non-controlling environment in the district of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.
