Sheria Mtaani is a community organization based in Nairobi County. Our mission is to create legal awareness by enhancing access to information legal clinics and advocacy of rights.
Focus: Family, Gender-based violence, Livelihoods, Peace-building & Transitional Justice, Right to Information, Women's Rights
- SHERIA MTAANI was established in 2017 by a section of Catholic University of E.A Law students who saw a need to establish free, accessible, localized platform for enlightening members of the community on legal & right issues. The caucus has since been joined by Law students from across other universities. Its architects envisioned and recognized that it was important for members of public to fully know their rights as enshrined in Chapter Four of the Constitution. Our objectives include:
- To ensure that there justice is served to all parties in the courts notwithstanding the financial muscles of the parties.
- To improve the legal awareness among the youths through legal clinics and aids.
- To give free legal representation to the less fortunate individuals who cannot afford the price of justice.
- Give legal aids to the inmates and remandees by helping them to launch their appeals and execute their cases.
- To help underprivileged women who have reported their cases to the children’s department.
- To help in counselling of women and children who have gone through abuse which may be either physical or psychological.
- To help in deterring crimes by working hand in hand with police through counselling of the criminals.
- To prevent gender violence and child abuse.
- To ensure that elected leaders perform their duties and roles as per the constitution.
- To increase collaboration plans with other organizations, bodies or individuals whether national or international but having advocacy strategies for the similar cause as laid herein.
- To commence serious plea bargain initiatives in Kenya. Our activities include:Legal clinics, Free legal aids, Representation in courts, Championing for youth representation and rights, Encouraging youth education in the community, Crime deterring activities: tree planting, football matches, campaigns, excursions and outing
