Serikat Paguyuban Petani Qaryah Thayyibah (SPPQT) is a Union of Farmers Associations, established on August 10, 1999, by young village activists and farmer associations, focusing on community empowerment and agricultural policy advocacy. SPPQT has been working systematically and consistently to empower farmer groups and promote food sovereignty through environmentally friendly agricultural development programs. SPPQT’s mission is to strengthen community resilience, enabling them to manage and control resources and their potential capacity in accordance with the principles of justice, environmental sustainability, gender justice, and equal relations between men and women. This mission is carried out through five main strategies:
1. Strengthening farmer capacity/community organizing
2. Smart farming and natural resource conservation
3. Community-based economic development
4. Women’s empowerment
5. Policy advocacy on agrarian reform and climate change mitigation
SPPQT has 18,600 members, consisting of men and women, spread across 13 regencies/cities in Central Java Province. SPPQT’s organizational structure consists of farmer associations at the community and village levels, as well as spatial farmer entities serving as network hubs in their respective areas. The farmer associations and network hubs are represented by the Farmers’ Representative Council (FRC) at the Union of SPPQT, which acts as the legislative and controlling body. Meanwhile, day-to-day program implementation and organizational operations are managed by the Union Executive Board (UEB), supported by the Organizational Advisory Committee (OAC) and Expert Committee (EC), based on specific relevant expertise.
