Lamu Women Alliance (LAWA), is a women-led community-based network working across Lamu County along the Kenyan coast. We are a consortium of grassroots women’s groups united by a shared mission to amplify women’s voices, advance gender equality, and promote social, economic, and environmental justice in our communities. Our work is rooted in the lived realities of women and girls, particularly in marginalized and underserved areas, where systemic barriers continue to limit access to rights, opportunities, and decision-making spaces.
Through our programs, we focus on five key thematic areas: climate justice, education, elimination of violence against women and girls, women’s economic empowerment, and human rights advocacy. We conduct community dialogues, awareness campaigns, and capacity-building sessions to equip women and youth with knowledge and practical skills to claim their rights. We also engage in advocacy and policy spaces to influence inclusive decision-making at local and county levels. Additionally, we support safe spaces for women and girls, mentorship initiatives, and grassroots organizing efforts that strengthen collective action and resilience. Our approach is community-driven, ensuring that solutions are locally informed, sustainable, and impactful.
