The Indigenous Women and Children Organization (IWACO) is a women-led CBO founded in 2023 and registered in 2024 in Kenya. Based in Laikipia North, IWACO works to uplift marginalized women, youth, and children, especially from indigenous communities including the Maasai, Samburu, Pokot, and Turkana. Our vision is a just society where all enjoy human rights, free from gender-based violence and climate-related harm.

Rationale:
IWACO addresses the critical lack of targeted support for indigenous populations in Laikipia and Isiolo, who face FGM, GBV, and climate vulnerabilities. It was formed by local leaders committed to sustainable, culturally relevant solutions. We focus on empowering women and youth, protecting children, and promoting peace, justice, and sustainable development through strategic partnerships.

Program Areas:
We operate in 5 wards in Laikipia (Mukogodo East/West, Sosian, Salama, Segera) and Oldonyiro in Isiolo. Our focus areas include:

  1. Ending FGM & GBV through advocacy and awareness
  2. Climate-smart livelihoods (e.g., beekeeping, land restoration)
  3. Peacebuilding and community governance
  4. Clean water access and infrastructure
  5. Child protection and alternative family care
  6. Education support and psychosocial services
  7. Legal aid for GBV survivors

Governance & Membership:
IWACO is guided by a diverse board of professionals and is led by women. We work with 16 groups, including women’s, youth, and faith-based organizations. Our headquarters is in Kiwanja Ndege, Laikipia North, and we rely on volunteers committed to community-driven change.

Partnerships:
We collaborate with government agencies, elders, and civil society to promote legal awareness and resolve conflicts. We are open to partnerships that enhance our impact and align with our mission.
