The Baringo Women and Youth Organization (BWYO) is a community-based organization committed to advancing the rights, well-being, and resilience of  indigenous communities in Baringo County, Kenya. Established in 2019, BWYO was founded to provide a strong and inclusive platform through which the Ilchamus community and other marginalized groups can voice their challenges, meaningfully participate in decision-making processes, and access opportunities that improve their livelihoods and dignity.
BWYO works to address the complex and interlinked challenges faced by indigenous peoples in Baringo, including environmental degradation, economic marginalization, persistent climate change impacts, and the gradual erosion of cultural heritage and traditional knowledge systems.
Guided by the belief that empowered women and youth are catalysts of sustainable and inclusive development, BWYO implements community-led and culturally grounded initiatives that strengthen resilience at household and community levels. Our programs focus on ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation, sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment, gender equality, youth leadership, and the protection and promotion of indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage.
BWYO adopts a rights-based, participatory approach that centers the voices of local communities in planning, implementation, and monitoring of interventions. We work closely with community elders, women leaders, youth groups, county authorities, civil society organizations, and development partners to strengthen local governance, improve service delivery, and influence policies that affect indigenous and marginalized populations.
Through advocacy, capacity building, research, and grassroots action, BWYO seeks to build resilient, informed, and self-reliant communities where women and youth are not only beneficiaries of development but active leaders shaping a just, equitable, and sustainable future for Baringo County and beyond.
