Video: What Do We Mean by Legal Empowerment?

In this short video, Namati’s founder and CEO, Vivek Maru, describes the movement for legal empowerment.

He tells the story of 70 families in Sierra Leone who won their land back after a chief sold it to a Chinese rubber company without asking them. And the story of a single mom in India, Manisha Goswami, who started out as an environmental vigilante, slashing the tires of trucks dumping illegally in her hometown river, and then found her groove by learning and using the law.

Today the legal empowerment network is made up of over 750 organizations from 150 countries, and every member is creating stories like these.

Together, we are building a pathway to justice that has relevance from Minnesota to Myanmar.

Filmed at the Oslo Freedom Forum (2016)

We’d love to know hear your thoughts. Does this description resonate with you, or do you understand legal empowerment to mean something different?
