Hi everyone, am Kesten Nyson from Malawi and i work for the Centre for Human Rights Education Advice and Assistance (CHREAA) as a Paralegal in Training on the job. I n the course of my work i focus on fighting for the vulnerable and marginalized communities especially those in places of detention and those that are victimized by sensitizing them on what the law says and what are their rights as accorded in the supreme law. I work with the criminal justice system in ensuring respect of the rule of law and human rights. I also handle general complaints as regards to human rights violations.

I worked with BLAST (A non-profit organisation) where i provide legal assistance to Rohingya Community in The biggest refugee camp in the world. I have been working here for 5 years and learned so many things. I learned their culture, habits and others. Though, as a legal service providing partner, we assist Rohingya Refugee to get their desired legal assistance. But, as they are muslim and Bangladesh has separate personal law for it’s citizens which is not applicable for noncitizen muslim. That’s why, they are deprived from some basic legal assistance from the court.

I’m Violet Matiru, a co-founder of a community-based organization – Millennium Community Development Initiatives MCDI (www.mcdikenya.org). We founded MCDI in 2005 to work with our communities to address environmental and livelihood challenges. Since 2013, MCDI has been focusing on the Athi River Basin and coordinating the communities who live within the Basin to understand their rights and responsibilities with regard to water and other natural resources. At 400 kilometers long, the Athi River is the second longest river in Kenya. We assist the communities in forming Water Resource Users Associations and also joining or forming Community Forest Associations (CFAs) so that they can be in a better position to advocate for their water rights and participate in environmental conservation and restoration programs. I’m also an independent consultant and recently served as the team leader for the End of Program Evaluation of the Natural Justice Legal Empowerment Program funded by SwedBio. I’m currently on a team evaluating the end of phase I evaluation of the Climate Justice Resilience Fund. I’m impressed by what communities can achieve with legal empowerment, hence my interest in joining this cause.

I work as a private practitioner dealing with mostly family law and I also work for a non-government organization called Cebu for Human Rights, Inc. I have been working for children and women’s rights even before I became a lawyer back in 2000 when I worked for Children’s Legal Bureau, Inc., an NGO also in Cebu. I have also been involved in LGBTQIA ++ rights, environment, as well as human rights issues.
Right now, we are mostly known for our work helping the cult survivors in Socorro, Surigao del Norte. We also have a pending case with the Department of Justice regarding the dismissal of our complaint against five police officers who killed a drug suspect (nanlaban) during Pres. Duterte’s time.
I want to know more about legal empowerment as I continue with my work.
